Professional Bio

Rachael Flatt, Ph.D., an Olympian and National Champion in women’s figure skating, is currently a postdoctoral fellow in clinical psychology. After retiring from competitive skating in 2014, she graduated from Stanford University and pursued a career that supported her passion for athlete mental health. She completed her doctoral degree in clinical psychology at UNC Chapel Hill and her clinical fellowship at Duke University Medical Center where she specialized in eating disorders and suicide prevention in athletes in addition to researching leveraging digital tools to increase equitable access to cutting-edge mental health care. Throughout her training, she has also played an active role in the sports community as an athlete representative for the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s Mental Health Task Force, US Figure Skating’s Board of Directors, and the US Council for Athletes’ Health Advisory Board. During her postdoctoral fellowship, she is continuing to address clinical care gaps in athlete mental health and suicide prevention at UNC Chapel Hill’s Suicide Prevention Institute, the Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders, and Carolina Athletics’ Mental Health and Performance Psychology program.
